Power of a Peer
Steven Bates 20 August 2022
Darkness, Sadness, Lack of gumption
Loss of drive, just can’t function
Seclusion calls me from the covers
Of my bed as if we’re lovers
Wrapped together, tightly bound
Praying no one comes around
To ring a doorbell or the phone
I just want to be left alone
Life like this is no life at all
And the hardest thing’s to make the call
To find some help, to find a friend
To help bring ‘round depressions’ end
Deep inside I know seclusions wrong
But to make that call I must be strong
I must seek help, meds, peer support
For a fellow peer is the best cohort
To help one thru the darkest cave
And walk you thru your life to save
So call someone when you’re down and out
Perhaps you’ll find it gives you clout
To untwine yourself from your blanket’s hold
Make that call, Be strong! Be Bold!!
I'm sending these to my son who is in the depths of depression now. I have never known anyone with NO friends. I mean NO friends. He wants to end this pain and I believe he will when he becomes stronger. There is no mental health help because they are leaving healthcare as fast as they can. We have to help each other. Thank you for the poems. Anything will help us.
